Karla Rothmann

Karla Rothmann is a painter located in Weilerswist, Germany.

“I communicate from my heart as I paint. When I stand in front of a blank canvas, I’m absorbing my subject to be painted and find myself feeling, rather than seeing, the colours to use. I’m fascinated by imperfect beauty. I call it awkward perfection. It’s interesting, it draws me in, and it inspires me. When I start to paint it’s as if the rest of the world is switched off and the universe is guiding me. It’s such an exhilarating sensation to see my happiness and joy transform this white piece of cloth into a colourful piece of art that captures the light and movement I love to bring into all my paintings.”

Before becoming a full-time artist, Karla combined her passion for horses with a successful career in the equine industry. Her lifelong relationship with art was rekindled when she began studying at the Arte Fact art school in Bonn, Germany.

“I remember sitting there with these other artists and almost bursting into tears from being immersed in this amazing art energy. Something deep inside me was reignited as if the light inside me had been switched on again.”

Her work is produced using acrylics and oil paints. She also experiments with oil sticks and is drawn to their texture and intense colours. Karla’s art aims to capture movement and convey the intense energy and emotion in her subjects.

Her travels and life experiences influence her art. “Whenever I look at something interesting or beautiful, I can’t just look and sweep past it. I like to look into whatever I’m absorbing. As I’m perceiving things I’m graphing it out with my eyes as if I’m standing in front of a canvas.”

Alongside her personal projects, Karla is also available for private commissions.
