Oscar Gómez

Oscar Gómez is a Colombian artist and award-winning writer of mini-stories who for 20 years hid under the guise of a successful graphic designer, illustrator and brand creator. Painting is the doorway into which he escapes from the literal representation, coherent and sometimes asphyxiating moments of marketing.

He has found in the chaos of creation the most reliable seed of order. Starting with pure colour, followed by mixing and blending and then the subsequent drip of paint, this process can initially result with the abstract, but as each collection of colour gathers and repeats a figurative referent is revealed. Through this method, Oscar has found his unique expression.

Oscar’s work reflects his intention to disrespect the purism of an image. Getting closer to intentional neglect, to the unfinished line, to the backdrop that is confused with form, to the mistake as part of the perfection, he reshapes each element to liberate it from beauty so he can reshape it into something new.

He has found inspiration in the work of Jenny Saville, Jackson Pollock, Richard Billingham and Débora Arango who have similarly deconstructed the definition of beauty and harmony. He currently works from his native Medellin, but the fast growth of his work has generated interest from galleries in the USA and Italy.
